Equine Bodywork: What It Is and How It Works

Updated: Aug 19, 2021

A famous quote by horse trainer, John Lyons, goes, "When your horse follows you without being asked, when he rubs his head on yours, and when you look at him and feel a tingle down your spine, you know you are loved."

For many of us, a horse's unconditional love can heal a wounded soul. This is why we go so far out of our way to make sure our horse is cared for with the same tenderness and care they love us.

We make sure they are well-fed, housed, and trained. Being a horse owner is not an inexpensive life choice, but it is rewarding beyond measure. When our horses need are hurt or injured, we bleed with more than our wallets.

This is why it is so important to make sure we do everything possible to prevent the injuries and make sure our horses' physical health doesn't take an unnecessary turn for the worst. In comes equine bodywork.

What is Equine Bodywork?

Bodywork is an umbrella term that encompasses many forms of holistic treatments, such as body massage, acupressure, and more.

Not all bodies are created equal, including animals'. Like human clients, a good equine bodywork specialist personalizes the treatment to the horse's specific needs. It is important to pinpoint the exact cause of a horse's discomfort to ensure treatment is successful.

Why is Equine Bodywork So Important?

Bodywork can be done for three reasons:

  1. Improved performance: Bodywork sessions can enhance your horse's gait, range of motion, and stamina.

  2. Rehabilitation: If your horse has incurred an injury, it needs to be addressed as soon as possible. A delay can worsen the injury and affect healing time. A bodywork practitioner should be a part of your equine health care team. Along with your veterinarian and equine physical therapist, your bodywork specialist provides massages that help accelerate healing and improve strength, flexibility, and mobility.

  3. Prevention: Arguably, the most important reason for bodywork is injury prevention. A bodywork practitioner can spot early signs of trouble, such as stiffness and muscle spasms. By treating these issues early, the pain and cost of injury treatment and rehab may be avoided.

What Types of Treatments Does Balanced Performance, LLC provide?

At Balanced Performance, we provide integrated sports massage treatments. These include myofascial release, and craniosacral massages. We also utilize the T.E.N.S. unit, as needed.

In addition to massage treatments, we also offer saddle-fit services. A properly fitted saddle is as important to injury prevention as any bodywork treatment.
